portfolio introduction
My name is Karen D. Bain. I have an associate degree in Finance and
Accounting and Human Resource Management, both from the Community College of
the Air Force. I am currently active
duty Air Force, been in for 17 years. I work in Accounting and Finance. I am
currently the Resource Advisor for Misawa Security Operations Center at Misawa
AB, Japan. My job is to oversee the budget and finances for Japan and parts of
Alaska. While in the Air Force I was also a Recruiter for eight years. After
recruiting I returned to Finance to become a First Sergeant for a year. During
that time I managed a squadron of approximately 75-85 people daily. I am
married to a retired Air Force veteran. We have one son, eight years old who
works at keeping me active.
The reason I enrolled in Criminal Justice started out being personal. As a teenager I lived in the bad parts of town. I always saw other teenagers getting in trouble with the law and I knew there had to be someone who cared, someone that could help. One day a very pretty lady wearing a suit came through the neighborhood looking for one of the kids that was normally around. After she left I found out she was a probation officer. That is when I vowed that is what I wanted to do. I knew she was not there to carry him off to jail, but to check in on him. My passion is to help people. Being a recruiter for eight years with the AF gave me an opportunity to help others every day. For some it was getting them out the bad parts of town and for others it was giving them hope that there was something they could do in life. Also as a First Sergeant I was given the opportunity to help others. This job took on the duties more like those of a PO because normally when I had to help someone in this job they were already in trouble. I never stopped looking the chance to highlight the positive in other’s lives.
Now that I am in this program I realize that there are so many other ways to help people. I hope to make a difference in the lives of others, just by them knowing that I care and I am there to help.
I gained more knowledge from this program. When I first began I thought Criminal Justice was about being a police officer. I did not fully understand how this program would get me to fulfilling my dream as a PO. The more classes I took and the more I learned from the instructors and other classmates just opened up so much more to me. I can now see so many more doors being opened and more opportunities for me. As I worked my way through the different classes I could see why I wanted to be a PO but I could also see myself doing other things in this field as well.
My future professional goals are to finish my career in the United States Air Force. I would like to become a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force and after 30 years of service to retire. I have to look at things in a different light now because of all the changes that are being made concerning the military.
To be a PO would be great. I would like to work with troubled teens and show them that they can make a difference. Just as my jobs in the Air Force has changed from time to time, I would like to eventually move up the ranks to become a detective.
In this portfolio I will cover Critical Thinking, Ethical Reasoning, Leadership, Communication and finally Career Preparation. I will show how I have related each of the outcomes to the classes I have taken while at Southwestern College. I will also cover the knowledge and skills I have learned as well as any future goals I took from them.
