In today’s
culture, communication comes in more forms than just speaking with another face
to face. Communication comes in forms such as email & text (technology),
clothing and even silence. Depending on the situation and the audience,
one form of communication may work better than another. This is just another
reason to know your audience. Communication is the key to professional
excellence.
I knew that when I decided to get my degree online that there would be challenges only because I could not communicate with the instructor and classmates face to face. Relying on technology was going to be a hindrance for me but I knew I had to press through. All of the classes I took required me to answer discussion post and maybe write a paper. However, when I enrolled in Criminology and Deviant Behavior the communication and way we learned took a different route. We were required to watch factual videos and listen to actual cases, provided by the instructor, and then answer our discussion questions or complete our paper. The instructor made the class very much hands on for us. Was this still communication? Of course is was.
I have included a Crime Prevention through Environment Design (CPTED) evaluation. It included me taking pictures and telling what was wrong from an environmental stand point. This will come from the Criminology and Deviant Behavior class I was enrolled in. This exercise made me realize that many crimes are made easy for criminals. Tall bushes not trimmed and poorly lit areas are very inviting signs to criminals.
Another form of communication can come in the way a person dress or the ornaments they wear. In my Correctional Theory class one of my assignments was to define certain key words from our book and to pick a topic to further research. I chose Prison Stripes to define and to research (Orange Alert). Black and white jumpsuits will automatically communicate to you that the one wearing them is a inmate. But as a kid growing up I just thought that was the norm and not something that I would one day study about. I learned they were first used to distinguish the inmates from the guards in prison systems.
I hope to be able to apply all that I learned about communication to all aspects of my life. In my workplace communication can, over some time, seem to get weakened. Once you have worked with someone for a long time you stop addressing them the professional way, because now you are friends. You stop standing up when someone higher ranking comes in the room, because now you are working on something important. In my workplace, standing when someone of higher ranking walks in is a way of saying, I respect you. I hope to use all I have gained to keep the professional communication in my workplace, for myself and others.
A future learning goal of communication is to make all communication professional communication. No matter what level of communication you are dealing with, it needs to remain professional. My eight year old is in the 2nd grade and his teacher is the First Lady of the church we attend, so we are very close. We live on a very small Air Force Base and everyone knows everyone. When I deal with his teacher at church it is on a different level of me dealing with her at school. At church I call her Elder and for school I call her Mrs. Smith. But in both environments I have found that the way I communicate with her is always professional. It would be very unprofessional of me to act like an unconcerned or outraged parent in one situation and a holy woman of God in another. Communication is the key to professional excellence and relationships.
