Critical thinking is
evident in everyone’s life and some may use it more than others and some may
not realize they use it at all. It can be a small part of our lives or it can
be a dominating part. Being a Resource Advisor critical thinking plays a big
part in my everyday life. I have to decide daily how to spend money on what is
critical and what is non-critical. I have to make decisions to go with what the
boss told me to do or to bring out the regulation and show him why we cannot do
things the way he wants to. I learned a lot from all of the courses along the
way to this point. One class in particular was Critical Thinking. During that
class my eyes were opened and my way of thinking changed. I realized not all
people think the say and for what I use critical thinking for others may not.
Characteristics of critical thinking are clarity, consistency and accuracy. Clarity is taking the time to think about the decisions that need to be made. I know there are time when directions and orders are thrown at us fast and we feel overwhelmed, but here is where a decision is to be made to make the time to think about what needs to be done. I have learned to ask for clarification in all things. My way of doing things could be different from someone else’s way.
In my Correctional Theory class when had to answer questions from the book as part of an assignment. In relation to clarity things have to be spelled out for all be able to comprehend. Part of the assignment was about Special Conditions on Probation. This is additional punishments set by the court to probationers. These rules need to be clear so that if they are violated they can pull they out as to enforce them.
Be consistent in the way you think and make decisions. One sure way to lose face it to constantly change the way you handle decisions. Some issues may be tougher than others but if you apply critical thinking consistency should come natural. When I am faced with tough decisions throughout the day I always try to look back at the last time I was in a situation comparable.
In my Foundation of Criminal Justice class I chose to write a paper about Prison Life. It talked about the difference in the two genders and how men and women tend to be treated differently. In this paper I look at children in prison with the mothers. Should this be allowed for women but not for me? This would show how you have to be consistent in your critical thinking. If you allow one mother to give birth and keep the child with her in prison for so long would you have to allow that opportunity for all the pregnant women?
Accuracy is key here and I think it follows close in line with clarity. Decisions have to be made off of accurate information. Therefore, if you are not clear in getting the facts first, you run the risk of making mistakes. Someone's life could be riding on whether or not the information provided is correct or in fact missing some important details.
I had an assignment that I had to answer a question about Presentence Investigation report. What role does this report play in corrections? This reports gives the details about the person's history, where they grew up and how they grew up, do they have a rap sheet, how is their physical or mental health and also how they feel about the crime they committed. This report with all the accurate information giving to the judge will give him a chance to think about fair and just sentencing.
Critical thinking has some place in each person life. Whether they chose to use it or do not realize they use it does not make it unimportant. Life is full of situations that require critical thinking. Clarity is being sure of what is required, consistency is not changing the way you handle situations. This is one sure way to lose face. Accuracy is knowing the facts before trying to make a decision, which leads back to clarity. Know the facts and ask questions if you need to. Everyone does not think the same.
I will continue to apply critical thinking to everyday living. Right now it critical thinking helps me to make sound financial decisions and I know that in the future whether I am still making financial decisions or any other decisions, what I have learned here will be of great value. I know for sure that I have to apply critical thinking skills to my career. I mentioned before that having 17 years in the military I will soon be eligible for retirement. Do I retire at 20 years or continue on the path that I am already on?
A specific learning goal of critical thinking would be for me to be able to critical thinking as a daily practice. For me critical thinking is mainly used in the workplace because of the job I am in. I would like to be able to use critical thinking when it comes to everyday things outside of the job. I have to learn this is not only used in the professional environment but the personal environment as well. I know there is a lot to be learned about this topic and will aim to make sure to learn all I can to help me know and in my future career.
